Frequently, when a non-human critter appears in a story, be it aliens, robots, mutants, spirits, or stranger fare, they'll be incapable of emotion ( usually love, but good also crops up), creativity/fecundity, or individuality. The most powerful and dangerous trait humans posses isn't some ineffable 'specialness', but our humanity itself. What aliens should know before coming to invade is that it works in reverse too. We can empathize with just about anything ( even a toaster!) given the right ( or the wrong) conditions.
